Preparing a local authority service for the future

NEEDS

The new leader of Derbyshire County Council’s Educational Psychology Service felt there was not a clear vision to shape, develop and guide the service going forward.

Local government departments sometimes have established cultures that can find change challenging. Introducing new processes, structures, technologies, or ways of working can be met with caution. Siloed structures can mean collaboration is tricky, which hinders information sharing and best practice.

The new leader had spotted areas for improvement and was keen to make some changes. SYCOL were invited to help shape culture, develop leaders and engage employees to improve systems.

Improving systems through innovation teams

SOLUTION

The improvement programme aimed to create a supportive and dynamic environment to facilitate a continuous cycle of improvement while promoting staff wellbeing.

SYCOL provided the necessary support to help the team and service to develop a structured approach to learning and improvement. This included the implementation of innovation teams, which were tasked with generating new ideas and implementing them within the service. The innovation teams were supported by regular coaching sessions and access to comprehensive training materials.

The implementation of new ideas was carried out in a structured way, with regular monitoring and evaluation of progress.

This process truly engaged employees, inspired transformation and improved performance.

Long-lasting improvement and wellbeing

IMPACT

The implementation of innovation teams led to the development of a more structured approach to learning and improvement, resulting in improved systems within the team. This way of working also increased collaboration and the sharing of best practice.

“We’ve been left with a culture of continuous improvement. The collaboration with SYCOL helped to embed continuous learning and improvement within the team, with more staff feeling supported, empowered and engaged.”
